Residential Waste & Recycling Information

Description: General waste refers to any waste that cannot be reused or recycled and does not pose a danger to people or the environment.

General waste may include:

  • Soft plastics
  • Polystyrene
  • Coffee cups
  • Food waste
  • Broken glass
  • Broken Crockery
  • Mixed materials that cannot be separated and recycled

Ensure waste bags are securely tied to prevent waste from spilling.

General Waste Pickup Schedule

Description: Recycling bays are available throughout the residential areas of ARR. Please see the map for details.

The following items can be recycled.

  • Glass bottles (must be separated by colour according to signage)
  • 10c Refundable Aluminium cans
  • 10c Refundable PET plastic bottles

These materials should not be disposed of in landfill, please remove lids, liquid and any other contaminants. Please place item in the bin loose not in plastic bags or cardboard boxes.

Where does our recycling go? 10c refundable Plastic bottles, aluminium cans & glass go to Envirobank in Alice Springs. Wine and spirit bottles re pulverised on site and used for a wide variety of projects – including landscaping and concreting.

All materials are repurposed into new products.

Description: When cardboard breaks down in landfills it releases methane gas. A greenhouse gas with 84x the global warming potential of CO2 in a 20-year time frame.

Cardboard drop off locations are located throughout ARR. See map for details.

Where does our carboard go?  Our recycled cardboard is sent to Visy where it is repurposed as new cardboard products e.g. packaging

Description: E-waste is any obsolete unwanted electronic device to be discarded. Heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury seep out of these electronic and into the environment.

Example of items accepted (not limited to this list):

  • Laptops/Computers & printers
  • TV’s
  • Music systems
  • Phones & tablets
  • White goods – No fridges, freezers, bulky items or air conditioners
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Electronic equipment (no industrial electronics)
  • E-waste can be stored neatly and safety next to bins/bin bays and will be collected by housing.

Please be mindful of the weather – if conditions are not suitable do not place e-waste outside.

Where does our e-waste go? E-waste is recycled Electronic Recycling Australia

Description: Any battery with the Pb symbol can be recycled. Lead can be extremely toxic to environmental and human health so it is important to recycle these items to avoid contamination of our landfill.

If you have Lead Acid Batteries to recycle please contact one of the following to arrange drop off at the waste facility;

Where do our Lead Acid Batteries go? Anton’s recycling – Alice Springs

Description: The gas bottle expiry date is marked on the bottle with the month and 2 digits of the year. If a gas bottle is undamaged, it can be refilled an unlimited number of times prior to expiry. Once older than 10 years, it must be inspected and tested by a licensed test station, prior to refilling.

Gas cylinder disposal should never be mixed in general waste or metal recycling bins. Gas bottle disposal and gas bottle recycling need to be done safely.

Only personal/household bottles accepted.

Where do LPG bottle go? Either Keenhart or Elgas where the steel and brass can be recycled

Description: This is only applicable to personal furniture. If it is owned by Voyages please contact housing.

In the first instance furniture should be sold or donated.

If the furniture is not in good condition residents can store it neatly and safely next to the recycling bays or bins and housing will collect when they do hard rubbish pickups.

  • Please be mindful of the weather. If conditions are not suitable do not place hard rubbish outside

Description: This is only applicable to fire extinguishers that you have purchased personally.

Description: Recycling and reusing used motor oil is preferable to disposal and can provide great environmental benefits. Recycled motor oil can be re-refined into new oil, processed into fuel oils and used as raw materials for the petroleum industry.

Used motor oil should never be placed inside the general waste bins – see photo below.

ØPlace used motor oil in a sealed container for housing or waste services to collect.

ØOil filters and oily rags can also be recycled to recover oil and metal

What happens to out hydrocarbon waste? Recycled through JJ Richards

 

Description: Food waste includes any left over food from preparation, cooking and eating. Food waste also includes food that has “gone off”.

Unfortunately we don’t currently have the capacity to separate food waste from general waste to compost. However  If you have a garden the best option for you is to compost your own food waste at home.

Description:  Aerosols are a broad category of gases or liquids stored under pressure. Pressurised chemicals can be a hazard because their concentration can cause injury if released incorrectly, like through a puncture. Many aerosols are also flammable and poisonous chemicals. Flammable, pressurised chemicals have the potential to explode. For example, spray paints, cleaner fluid, lubricant or lighter fluids, which are commonly found in the workplace.

If you have aerosols to dispose of (e.g. spray paint or butane gas) DO NOT put it in the general waste bins unless they are completely empty. If they are not completely empty and you cannot use them please contact one of the following to arrange drop off at the waste facility;

If you have green waste, please contact housing or waste services to arrange a pick-up or drop off. Please do not place green waste into the green bins.

Please store neatly next to the bins for housing to collect.

Composting Information

On average, 40% of rubbish sent to landfill is food waste.

You can make a difference by composting your food scraps or by using a worm farm.
